Country: Sweden. Language: Swedish. Runtime: 85 min. Silently at first, but the actual events being depicted don't matter so much as the perspective they're being depicted from.
The way the camera lingers on her reactions makes you want to scream at the person misgendering her without actually having….
When we're young we want to meet the one person who loves us in all the ways the people who were supposed to love us before didn't.
It's in our vulnerability that we let anyone in and just tell ourselves that this love we've manufactured between us is the true love. Even if the things this other person does starts to show up as insecurities or cruelness.
So many indie romance dramas want to capture what this film conveys in its small bits of beauty on screen with human characters.
There's no villains here and no happy endings. It's just people who need to grow,…. I really liked how the characters were presented, especially the main character Ellie.
She isn't confused about who she is like so many transgender characters are in film. She is confident and secure with herself.
The film focuses more on how she fits in the world with others. The film went a long way in helping me to understand transgender identification.
There's a great dramatic scene in which Andreas, Ellie's love interest, tells her "I'm not gay! Beautiful camera work. Strong acting. Well-developed and interesting characters.
Quite a bit of penis. So between Sally's incredible review and the description on this site, I knew I needed to see this immediately. Smoking has an odd sensuality to it.
I'm mostly attracted to it on screen or in photos. It's an odd relationship because I'm mildly asthmatic and putting me near cigarette smoke makes me nauseous.
Seeing Andreas light two cigarettes and hand one to Ellie was so sexy and I can't explain why. There was a distinct chemistry between the two down to the cigarettes, a nice distinct click between the two characters we just don't get in a lot of films - or at least not relationships I generally can feel myself in.
After being saved from a sure and certain beating in a toilet block, Sebastian Saga Becker starts a intimate relationship with her saviour, Andreas Iggy Malmborg.
At first its nothing more than an obsession with the tissue she lent him, now stained with his dried blood, which she stores in her box of macabre remembrances along with a shiv and a bar of soap carved with the name of her future self, Ellie.
When Sebastian does track Andreas down, he's throwing up in a local park. They share a spark nonetheless and start to hang out on the sly.
I quite liked the opening, in which we start with an extremely soft focus shot of the main character where one can only vaguely make out a set of heavily diffused headlights from a car, reducing this car to a set of moving, glowing discs, before the focus is very gradually deepened until the background can be made out clearly, both person and surroundings in clear view.
Perhaps symbolizing the journey the main character is about to take, as she -- amidst struggles, adversity and setbacks -- finds the strength to increasingly leave her own isolated pocket of personal space and become part of the world around….
The movie break my heart. I wish with all my heart Allie and Andreas were forever and ever ever together. They melted my heart.
Meh meh meh. Nothing really felt all that natural. Ellie smashes someone on the head with a bottle and suddenly Andreas is telling her he loves her????????
No other character interested me, and also the sex scenes were just so tedious. The director defo has a piss fetish. That pissing scene was especially divisive for me because on one hand, it was a fucking pissing scene, but on the other….
Although I can't personally relate to it, and therefore can't speak to its authenticity, I'm confident in saying that Something Must Break is one of the best crafted, most genuine trans narratives you're likely to ever see.
Not only that, but it's also a kick in the foot to all of the truscums and TERFs who might see it thinking it might validate their ideas.
This is not a film about a transition, it's about the protagonist's gender identity and how she navigates in a world that does not understand her and is hostile to her.
The film refutes the idea of transition as a finish line, and instead portrays it as a process: Ellie has not undergone HT or…. Bit boring really.
Not for me. Also the song that plays when Sebastien followed Andreas to the bar was simply dreadful. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I liked the film. I was scared for her a lot, I really didn't want anything bad to happen to her, all the men in the movie scared me and I wanted to protect her.
I then realized that in a way I was infantilizing her and she didn't need my protection, she needs respect, and kindness and a emotionally responsable boyfriend.

\They form a unity. They dream about escaping boredom and the risk of becoming what everyone else is. And then there is Ellie - the superwoman growing inside of Sebastian who Andreas loves and fears.
This is the summer when everything happens and both of them will choose paths that will determinate their lives forever.
It's a battle for love where Sebastian finally has to realise that he has to let Ellie loose, find the strength within himself and not let his happiness depend on someone else.

Despite a cold scenery and a gloomy Stockholm, the warmth of the characters and the intimacy that they build together has something charming and even magical.

The purity from the tenderness scenes is literally mesmerising and "Something Must Break" brilliantly avoids the pitfalls inherent to LGTB films.
Far from the colours and extravagance of Araki's movies, this movie is quite rough but still offers some crazy scenes, an insanity that stem from Andreas and Ellie's passion.
Because we never know if this passion is made of love or not, but the director wants to make the viewer understand that the goal is not to know or to see it but to feel it.
