He saw the ghost of his dead father who mocked and harassed him repeatedly. His father was never satisfied.
He never complimented Olson on anything he accomplished. Graduated from college. Big deal. Got married. Who cares. Got a job with a newspaper.
So what. Nothing was good enough for him. This man led Olson to drink as a teenager when he struggled with confidence and finding an identity for himself.
He ran to alcohol to appear cool, and gradually became more dependent on it. His father died of lung cancer. He smoked two packs of Pall Malls a day.
He smoked blatantly after his diagnosis and treatment. On his death bed, he was a depleted husk of a man, nearly transparent, not substantial in the least.
Life had taken a toll on his sixty year old body. It was self-inflicted. His father was present in the bar. He stared at Olson from a corner.
He had gray skin, his eyes were gray, and his body was emaciated, ravaged by the cancer. He smoked a cigarette and stared at Olson smoking a cigarette.
Olson took the shot of scotch and tried to ignore his father. The disapproval was etched on his face. He always regarded Olson with disgust, from when he had long hair as a teenager until he was a short haired journalist for The Houston Chronicle.
Olson ordered another shot. He pictured his ex-wife, Rosanna, scolding him about drinking, and about how he was out of control. He decided to get drunk instead.
Maybe that counted as rock bottom. Maybe not. The bartender, Lenny, stopped in front of Olson, disturbing his thoughts about Rosanna.
Go talk to her. The blonde waved at Olson. He traversed the bar until he stood in front her. He felt dumb. He should have practiced something to say before boldly coming over.
She introduced herself as Roxanne. He used his first name, Joe, though, most people called him by his last name.
He offered to buy her a drink. She said a mojito and he stopped Lenny to order the drink. He got another shot of scotch for himself.
Olson lit a cigarette. He offered one to Roxanne, but she said no. He held his Pal Mall away from her to prevent smoke from blowing in her face.
She sat beneath a large fan that spun slowly on the ceiling. The drinks were delivered by Lenny. Olson picked up his and toasted to prosperity with her.
He downed the shot in one fluid motion. The scotch burned going down. He hissed to lessen the blow. He hit his cigarette while Roxanne casually drank her mojito through a straw.
He talked to her about life, about his job, and she told him about herself. He put out his cigarette when it became too short to hold. The cherry burned down to the filter.
He swayed in place. She was much more sober than him. She wore a blue dress, had the appearance that she was lonely and came to the bar to find someone.
He had to fuck the frustration out of himself. Roxanne smiled at him and played with her blonde hair, twirling strands around her fingers. Olson beckoned Lenny to come over and he paid both their tags.
