Christopher Nolans Kriegsfilm erzählt über eine historische Rettungsaktion, bei der über alliierte Soldate, die von den Deutschen engekesselt. This was the original Dunkirk. It was something to behold. A rescue by sea of all small boats sailing out to France to rescue and bring home to England, thousands of troops that were trapped on the shores of Dunkirk.
It was a marvelous undertaking. Much more detailed information about the actual battle and rescue at Dunkirk in France than the new version.
The new version was cinematically exceptional but should have had another title because it did not depict the event in all its intensity and significance.
So much is made about WWII well after it started -- this is the only film to spend time on the harrowing escape of British soldiers from the coast of France before the Germans snapped them up!
If not for the escape from Dunkirk, Britain would have probably been forced to lose or capitulate to Germany, one way or another.
An excellent prelude to watching the Battle of Britain, too! Honey Solomon Top Contributor: Pets. This presents the evacuation of Dunkirk in an interesting and personal format.
The best British actors and terrific cinematology of what became known as The Miracle of Dunkirk and a watershed for the British people. I would have to disagree that this is boring.
This is a classic of the genre that offers a good storyline and is definitely worth watching. Smooth streaming and crisp audio.
Very realistic movie about a dark episode in Britain's history when her soldiers were fighting with their backs to the sea surrounded by the Nazis, and how her Navy and volunteer, civilian boat owners rallied to pull off a miracle and saved over , men.
The movie showcases the resoluteness of the British people when facing desperate situations. Stiff upper lip and all that! Wanted to know more about what took place at Dunkirk and this book certainly filled in the blanks for me.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This digitally restored film is nothing less than brilliant. Based upon the novel, 'The Big Pick-Up' by Elleston Trevor, it was released in - just 18 years after the retreat from Dunkirk - a searing event still in the mind of all the actors.
Unlike the much hyped version, it provides an entire picture - not least the retreat to the port of Dunkirk. The scenes of massed troops on the dunes are brought vividly to life - especially the church service - blown apart by Stuka dive-bombers.
That was truly evocative. As I write, I have before me the Death Certificate of my cousin - some 14 years my senior. Date of Death: between 30th May and 2nd June '.
He was just 19 years of age. I never had the privilege of meeting my cousin but I do know that his mother and father never recovered from their loss.
He was killed in the retreat to Dunkirk and I have been able to visit his grave in a tiny military cemetery. The term, 'The Dunkirk Spirit' is banded about to this day.
But Dunkirk was not a victory - but something of a miracle of Biblical proportions - and It should be remembered as such.
A great re issue on blu ray. I saw the version of Dunkirk at the Odeon Leicester Square in 70mm and was impressed by the technology, with it's sound and image which conveyed what would have been the impact of war on the soldiers.
However the narrative lost coherence, the dialogue was muffled except for Kenneth Branagh's monologue. On a Saturday afternoon with a few friends we will watch the version and follow it up with the version following it's release in late December Brilliant movie depicting the dunkirk part of the war from the eyes of several soldiers just trying to get home, its gritty when it needs to be, especially the scene where the french villagers are walking along the road and don't like the British soldiers because to them all the brought was the war, they then leave them to see them slaughtered by a German plane.
Slowly as they make there way back to the beach front in Dunkirk we see them lose there comrades along the way and the effect it has on them all. Nicely cut in between this is whats occurring across the channel in England and how they got together a rag tag fleet of ships from anyone who had a boat to sail across the sea to collect the waiting and dying men.
Richard Attenborough has a wonderful part as the at times cowardly and scared man who wants no part of the war but eventually realizes you cannot hide from it forever.
And there is Bernard lee remembered by many as the original "M" in james Bond rallying people together and then losing is life on the beach itself.
This film also show the lack of foresight by the relevant government about how to handle the dunkirk withdrawal and who suffered at there hands. This is a film that is meant to make you realize what happened and not to repeat it again, whether we head that warning is to be seen but its memorable.
This is such filming This should be shown in Schools One person found this helpful. It was well directed and written. Well acted mainly I suppose because most of the actors in the film fought in WW2, perhaps many extras were at Dunkirk in No glamour, no heroics just desperate men trying to survive and get home.

Watch the video. Four hundred thousand British and French soldiers are hole up in the French port town of Dunkirk. The only way out is via sea, and the Germans have air superiority, bombing the British soldiers and ships without much opposition.
The situation looks dire and, in desperation, Britain sends civilian boats in addition to its hard-pressed Navy to try to evacuate the beleaguered forces.
This is that story, seen through the eyes of a soldier amongst those trapped forces, two Royal Air Force fighter pilots, and a group of civilians on their boat, part of the evacuation fleet.
Written by grantss. Brilliant cinematography, real planes flying, real destruction of planes, the most real as possible, that's always great for films and it's one of Nolan's best quality as a director, he want real things happening on camera, and of course Hans Zimmer original score is also brilliant.
The non-linear narrative is intelligent, the mole sequences fell longer, in a good way, because the characters spend 1 week there, the sea sequences are a little bit more faster because the characters spend 1 day there and the air sequences are even faster because the characters spend 1hour there, when the 3 got together is the climax, or at least should be, that's is when the non-linear storytelling gets a little messy, some of the sequences in the third act are not puted in the best way, but the whole movie is so extremely well made in his technical stand points, written full of suspense and with an amazing original score by Hans Zimmer, that a lot people's don't realize that or they just don't care.
The most negative point like i said is that some scenes don't fit very well in the non-linear agitation of the film, especially in the last half hour, and for a non-linear movie this is bad, but like i said, with all the qualities that this films has, this is not going to ruin the experience to watch.
This film is also not made to be most remembered about the acting, which is not necessarily a bad thing, some peoples also says that the characters are kinda weak, which is not actually true, sure they are not as strong like the characters in Saving Private Ryan for example, but they are strong, the film just don't focus too much on them, the film is most interested on what happened in Dunkirk during that particular time in World War II.
All that said, Mark Rylance is really good in this movie, he has the best lines and Cillian Murphy is also very good.

I was rather disappointed with the haphazard story line if you could call it that. So I recently rented it to watch again.
Both my wife and I thought that the old movie was FAR superior. It doesn't appear to be available on DVD, more's the pity.
But watch it if you get the chance. Excellent, intelligent, beautifully photographed, and historically accurate telling of the Dunkirk tale, featuring a typically sterling British cast and wonderful musical score by Sir Malcolm Arnold, whose movements concerning the Royal Navy are particularly well done.
Unlike too many [American] war stories, this movie never goes over the top - pace, FM Haig - but evokes genuine emotion and involvement without recourse to cliches, or political rectitude.
