Joan Hickson does a splendid job of playing the character. Season 3 is great but the Caribbean mystery is definitely not well done. The screen writing is off, there is no flow in the storyline and whoever thought it was a good idea to include the loud background insect chirping didn't listen to the final cut before releasing it.
Overall, this series is fantastic and I'm glad to see it on Prime and on Britbox. Joan Hickson is "Miss Marple", sorry all other great actress who play the part, you can't compare.
Adaptions don't rewrite Christie. Top quality acting, story and production. The BBC got it more than right. Love it but the awful music score takes so much away from it.
If it was completely music free would be much better. It has nothing to do with the fact that it was filmed in s because there were many movies and TV programs with the score which suited what was happening on the screen, but this is beyond believe.

In "The Moving Finger", the "Pygmalion" girl gets a "Lady Diana" haircut except that it looks like it was cut with a dull kitchen knife. And most of the non-elderly women simply wear their hair in combs on either side of the head, a hugely popular style in the early to mids, not the mids when the series is set.
This may be a minor point to most people, but I make my living as a costume historian. Four years after this series, Clive Exton would produce the acclaimed Poirot series starring David Suchet and the clothes, the hair, the people in the distant background would be so perfect that one could almost imagine they were filmed in the s.
So this quintessentially faithful dramatization of the Miss Marple stories disappoints me because it gets so close, and then ruins the visuals with 80s hair.
I am so happy to find these available again. These are the perfect adaptations of Christie's novels. Joan Hickson IS Miss Marple, with the wit, intelligence, and good sense that character was supposed to have.
I have read the books and watched all of these, and am joyfully setting out to watch them all again. Really the best rendition of the character.

That's what makes her's such a true to life performance! OMG, I just subscribed I'd forgotten about the musical soundtrack I withdraw my complaint about the soundtrack, tho still awfully "cute" the remastering excellent video has quieted it into the background most of the time.
But the subtitles! Its really fun to watch this time around. Joan Hickson is brilliant as Miss Marple. In one silent gesture, she is standing and reading the newspaper, looks up, turns and sits on a chair, straight and proper, and intelligent.
Just Thinking. This one silent intent gives so much character! I have always loved this series. The best renditions of Agatha Christie's disarming and cunning sleuth.
