Thornton decides to return to El Dorado, hoping to save Harrah from being gunned down by McLeod and his men. He is followed by Mississippi who also wishes to help, despite his lack of experience and terrible aim with a gun.
Once Thornton and Mississippi arrive in El Dorado, they hear more of the story behind Harrah's change.
The two men then join with Deputy Sheriff Bull in order to get Harrah sober and cleaned up. Mississippi contributes an old folk recipe for a hangover that he learned from Johnny Diamond, promising it will make any man unable to drink liquor for a while.
The concoction proves to be violently effective, and leaves Harrah sober and furious. When one of them shoots one of the McDonalds, Thornton, Harrah, Bull and Mississippi chase the shooter and his friends into an old church and then into Jason's saloon.
Later that night, Thornton and Mississippi decide to patrol the town in the hope of keeping the peace and are deputized by Bull. There is another shoot-out with McLeod and his men, which results in a minor leg injury for Harrah.
The next day, Maudie sends a message to Thornton and his friends, stating that McLeod's men are frightening her and her patrons.
When Thornton and Mississippi go to help her, they are ambushed and Thornton has an attack that leaves him partially paralyzed and captured by McLeod.
Subsequently, McLeod trades the injured Thornton for Bart Jason, a trade to which Harrah agrees, despite knowing that doing so will mean that nothing will stand in the way of McLeod going after the McDonalds.
Sure enough, McLeod and his men shortly thereafter kidnap one of the McDonalds in order to force Kevin McDonald to sign over his water rights to Jason.
Thornton and the others are forced to quickly come up with a plan to rescue Kevin McDonald's son and neutralize Jason and McLeod.
Despite Thornton's paralysis and Harrah's leg injury, the two of them, along with Bull and Mississippi, return to town on wagons.
Jason, McLeod and his men are killed, and order is restored to El Dorado. Thornton also begins to imply that he may discontinue his wandering ways in order to stay in the town with Maudie.
Leigh Brackett wrote the original script which she described as "the best script I had ever done in my life. It wasn't tragic, but it was one of those things where Wayne died at the end.

The continuity was so poor that John Wayne who actually worked continuity in silents while a star college football player, a method used by Hollywood fans to slip players some spending money had his character mention it in one of the last scenes.
Director Howard Hawks enjoyed it so much, he left it in the movie. Mitchum's version of this story is that he objected, but Hawks had him switch sides with the crutch based on what looked best in that scene.
When Hawks saw how bad it looked in the dailies, Mitchum suggested the additional dialogue between his character and Wayne's to cover the gaffe.
In the final scene, both Wayne and Mitchum have their crutches under the wrong arm. Goofs After Cole shoots the gun out of Milt's hand and tells him to "Pick it up and try again", the gun is about a foot from the front of the cabinet.
When Milt and Pedro reach down to pick up their guns a moment later, Milt's gun is now several feet from the front of the cabinet.

Yes No Report this. Thornton spares Joey's life, but the bullet has lodged against his spine. The local doctor doesn't have the skill to remove it, so Thornton heals and departs, despite the protests of local saloon owner Maudie, who has feelings for him.
Doc Miller warns Thornton a skilled surgeon should remove the bullet soon. As time goes on, Thornton suffers bouts of temporary paralysis in his right side.
Six months later, Thornton is in a saloon out of town, having avoided El Dorado out of guilt, when he witnesses a young man, "Mississippi" Traherne, confronting famed gunslinger Nelse McLeod, because McLeod's right hand man Charlie killed his foster father.
Thornton has to step in to save the naive youngster, who has literally brought a knife to a gunfight. McLeod is impressed and offers Thornton a job, revealing that he's accepted Jason's job offer.
He also says that Harrah is no longer a threat. In El Dorado, Maudie reveals that Harrah has become a helpless drunk 2 months prior after a girl ran out on him, and Harrah's deputy Bull confirms this.
After a fist fight with the drunken Harrah, Thornton agrees to use one of Mississippi's sobering concoctions to bring Harrah round, with violently effective results.
Harrah, ashamed of the laughingstock he's become, agrees to stay sober. After three men shoot one of the MacDonald's, Thornton, Bull, Mississippi and Harrah hunt the men into an old church and gun them down.
One man escapes, leading them straight to Jason, whom Harrah arrests and holds for trial. Mississippi stops Joey from killing Jason on the walk back to the jail, and the two begin a relationship.
Bull officially deputizes Mississippi and Thornton. They patrol the town to keep the peace, stopping an attempted attack by McLeod's gang on the jail in which Harrah is crippled by a bullet to the leg.
Maudie brings them some supplies while they are holed up in the jail, and McLeod's men start harassing her and her patrons. Thornton and Mississippi go to rescue them, but Thornton suffers an attack of paralysis and is captured by McLeod.
Harrah agrees to trade Jason for Thornton and leave town, despite Thornton's protests. Jason and McLeod's men kidnap Saul MacDonald and demand that Kevin turn over his water rights for the return of his son.
Rightly suspecting Jason will kill both Saul and Kevin once he has the water rights, Thornton, unable to walk, rides a wagon up to the front door of Jason's Saloon while Harrah, Bull, and Mississippi sneak in the back.
Bull distracts the men with a bugle call and Thornton opens fire, killing McLeod and several others while the rest ambush from behind and free Saul MacDonald.
Joey takes out Jason personally, saving Thornton from being shot in the back, and telling him she felt she owed him after her previous mistake.
Doc Miller's new assistant, Dr. Donovan, agrees to operate on Thornton if he stays in town, and Thornton implies he may give up wandering to stay with Maudie.
