Bond gibt sich auf einer Wellness-Farm als Masseur aus, um Domino kennenzulernen. Abends trifft er sie auf einem von Largo ausgerichteten Wohltätigkeitsball in Monte-Carlo wieder und stellt sich als James Bond vor.
Der Verlierer wird über die Joysticks mit Elektroschocks bestraft. Beide steigern sich in das Spiel hinein und es scheint, als verliere Bond, doch beim entscheidenden Spiel gewinnt er.
Sein Preisgeld in Höhe von Largo lädt Bond für den nächsten Tag auf seine Yacht ein. Largo gibt Fatima Blush eine letzte Chance, Bond zu liquidieren.

Bond kann sich dank seiner Uhr, die einen Laserstrahl erzeugen kann, von den Ketten befreien und rettet Domino auf einem Pferd aus der Burg.
Damit springen sie über die Klippen ins Meer und werden von Leiter und seinen Leuten gerettet, die sie mit einem U-Boot verfolgt haben. Zusammen mit Leiter begibt sich Bond mit Raketenfluggeräten zur Grotte und greift mit einigen Marines an.
Largo entkommt mit dem Nuklearsprengkopf durch einen Unterwassertunnel und bringt die Grotte hinter sich durch eine Explosion zum Einsturz. Bond findet über einen Brunnen einen zweiten Zugang und stellt Largo nach.
Auch der Beginn des Films ist vollkommen untypisch für einen Bond-Film. Er erhielt in einem Rechtsstreit die Möglichkeit, eine Neufassung von Feuerball zu drehen, bei der er sich möglichst eng an die Vorlage halten musste.
Dennoch wurden einige Passagen leicht verändert. Er wird bei der Bergung der Atombomben durch einen Handlanger von Largo erstochen, damit es einen Mitwisser weniger gibt.
Es finden sich viele weitere Anpassungen an den Zeitgeist, was dazu führte, dass Eon Productions nach Drehschluss versuchte, die Veröffentlichung des Films zu verhindern, mit dem Argument, dass der Film sich nicht so eng an die Vorlage halte, wie es aufgrund des Rechtsstreits vorgegeben war.
In der letzten Filmszene wird auf den Titel Bezug genommen, als Bond gefragt wird, wann er zum Geheimdienst zurückkehre.

It falls to Bond, of course, to save the world by tracking down the missing missiles. The film is fortunate in that it has not just one but two of the most beautiful Bond girls of all, Barbara Carrera as the seductive but lethal Fatima Blush and Kim Basinger as Largo's girlfriend Domino who defects to Bond's side after learning of her lover's evil plans.
A number of the Bond films have a plot that hangs upon the hero's ability to win over the villain's mistress or female accomplice- there are similar developments, for example, in "Goldfinger", "Live and Let Die" and "The Living Daylights".
In the official series, Bond's ally is normally regarded as the female lead, but here Carrera, playing the villainess, is billed above Basinger, who was a relatively unknown actress at the time.
Basinger, of course, has gone on to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, whereas Carrera is one of a number of Bond girls who have somewhat faded from view.
Of the villains, Max von Sydow makes an effective Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE, but Klaus Maria Brandauer seemed too bland and nonthreatening as Largo, except perhaps during the "Domination" game, a more sophisticated variant on those violent computer games such as "Space Invaders" that were so popular in the early eighties.
Brandauer can be an excellent actor in his native German, in films such as "Mephisto" and "Oberst Redl", but he does not comes across so expressively in English.
One of the film's features is that it both follows the normal Bond formula and, at times, departs from it. There is the standard world-in-peril plot, chase sequences, a series of exotic locations, glamorous women, sinister villains and a specially written theme song based on the film's title.
There is, however, no extended pre-credits sequence, and we see some familiar characters in a new light. For example, Bond's boss M becomes a languid, supercilious aristocrat, his American colleague Felix Leiter is shown as black for the only time, and the scientist Q is portrayed by Alec McCowen as a disillusioned cynic with despite his characteristically upper-class Christian name of Algernon a distinctly working-class accent.
There is also an amusing cameo from Rowan Atkinson as a bumbling British diplomat. Although Connery was perhaps not quite a good here as he was in some of his earlier films in the role, this ringing the changes on the familiar theme makes this one of the more memorable Bonds.
Rowan Atkinson's character states that he is from the British Embassy in Nassau. As, however, the Bahamas is a Commonwealth country, Britain would have a High Commission in its capital, not an Embassy.

Someone dragged off the street could play the part better than he did in this movie. So, Sean Connery, was behind the eight ball in every way while making this movie.
As good as he played bond, the makeup to portray an older Bond with a song in poor taste and actors who could not act around him, makes for a very dull movie.
What is worse I paid money to see this in a movie theater when it came out. I had hoped my impression of it would be better now, but I can assure you this viewing was worse than my initial viewing, hence this review.

Twist 2: year old Connery good-naturedly spoofs his well-known ambivalence by playing Bond as a clearly aging, fifty-something relic who defies that he's simply too old for this secret agent stuff.
With the movie anchored by Connery's timelessly suave presence, the film's villains Klaus Maria Brandauer as wily industrialist Emile Largo and Barbara Carrera as exotic, flamboyantly-dressed assassin Fatima Blush undeniably steal the show.
Pamela Salem's Ms. Moneypenny gets merely a glance, so it's disappointing that her character is essentially ignored.
Yet, overall, it's a pretty solid cast amiably playing Lorenzo Semple Jr. While the locales England, the Bahamas, Monaco, etc.
The stunts are hardly spectacular but are at least very believable for someone Connery's age and his impressive fitness. Further, there is a curious element of unpredictability, as neither the famous spear-gun "He got the point" scene, nor even Bond's escape from Largo's shark-infested swimming pool are recreated here.
Bond also gets a fun motorcycle chase and some excellent underwater action, including a final scuba showdown with Largo. Wickedly fun Fatima Blush's antics also add some much-needed zest to the Bond-Largo feud.
The flip side is that you'll know what's missing and what's still coming. There isn't a gun barrel walk; no flashy pre-credits sequence; no signature Bond theme; no slick, razzle-dazzle editing; and no other familiar franchise faces.
No matter the few surprises, anyone who has already seen "Thunderball" is familiar with the plot and its outcome. Additionally, despite good chemistry with Connery, Bernie Casey's Felix Leiter is relegated to Bond's sidekick, as the script never explains how he conveniently just shows up whenever needed.
Basinger's Domino is a standard damsel-in-distress, but she shares some nice scenes with Brandauer and Connery. To a charming Basinger's credit, her implausible, age-defying romance with Connery plays better and isn't nearly as icky as the similar Roger Moore-Tanya Roberts couple for 's "A View to a Kill.

To the fascinating cast of actors and characters you can add a good nation-hopping storyline about the theft of two thermonuclear warheads, with which SPECTRE intends to literally hold the world to ransom; unless, that is, Mr Bond can get to them first.
Sadly, none of this collaborative work was acknowledged in the credits for the released film, but the end result of it was a script which is logical, efficient, self-referential and occasionally very amusing.
It makes sense from beginning to end, which hasn't always been the case with scripts for Bond films, and it provides the perfect swansong to Connery's career of playing the character.
Whether by accident or design - and I think by Sean Connery's overall design - the script really could not have been bettered.
A number of the location scenes for 'Never Say Never Again' were shot in the lengthening shadows of what looks like late afternoon sunlight.
This bathes Connery's performance in the kind of elegiac light which complements the fact that he is portraying an older James Bond, in what was to be his final performance in the role.
In other words, the film deliberately plays to the strengths of having an older Sean Connery playing a more mature James Bond, and this is true of both the script as well as the direction.
I think the intelligence of this approach is much to the film's credit. I also think that Connery's performance as Bond was refreshed and reinvigorated by his twelve-year break from the role, and from him bringing to it a more seasoned and relaxed maturity than might have been possible earlier in his career.
In truth, he wears the part like a comfortable old suit which still happens to look good in the mirror. And he clearly got himself into better physical shape for this film than was the case, for example, with 'Diamonds Are Forever' where he was beginning to look distinctly paunchy.
It is a pity that post-production tensions between star, director and producers, resulting in some public bad-mouthing, have tended to obscure the film's virtues.
But it seems pretty clear to me, both from the film's contents and from its length, that what Connery wanted to put on the screen, is pretty much what is on the screen.
Through Kevin McClory, the film's lineage can be traced back to a personal collaboration with Ian Fleming himself, and things don't get much more 'official' than that.
With its exotic locations, interesting characters, strong script and well choreographed fights, 'Never Say Never Again' has got just about everything that you could possibly want from a James Bond film.
And so far as this reviewer is concerned, it is the best Bond film of them all. One thing that really bores me is the age old discussion of who is the best !
People chop and change their narrow minds all the time when it comes to who holds the crown. When Sir Roger Moore sadly passed in , people started saying that he was their favourite because "nobody did it better".
I've never met anyone who says anything but Sean Connery was the best! I firmly believe that having this argument is as pointless as vegetarian food and alcohol free beer!

With Sean Connery returning to the role in Never Say Never Again in this unofficial film, put the boot right into the face of the series.
Never Say Never Again is far better than Octopussy and not because Connery was back but because it's just a better movie. Connery looks menacing and dangerous back in the tux and does a fair bit of bonking.
