I guess I expected that big transformation, big awareness of what the protagonist did wrong and just a big, bold character development.

I guess I expected there to be an enlightenment point where he just stopped what he was doing and started all over again with new intentions.

But real life is not like that. This isn't fiction. It's someone's life that you read of, someone going through stuff I wouldn't be able to even imagine had I not read about, the violence, the cruelty, hopeless fights you go through with prisoners, guards, psychopaths, drugs, and most importantly yourself.

And in real life, I think it's the biggest of developments if you wrote a book about how you survived 5 years imprisoned in another country, in a place you made a home for yourself out of despair.

And it's the biggest of gains if you wrote a book that starts with anecdotes of your father hitting you and how it played a huge part at you committing crimes and going that path in the first place, and in the end, you still have the courage to say that you forgive him.

Stories like this, even though they have no similar aspects to my life, make me feel a lot of things. I'm glad I read this book.

Associated with paradisiacal beaches, this country is a paradox indeed, for a military junta rules it, if somebody criticizes the monarchy — no matter how mildly — the risk of a long prison sentence is very high, considering the preposterous, draconic lese majeste laws in effect there.

Nevertheless, this is not about the monarchy, the politics of Thailand, albeit the rulers should do something about the terror reigning in their abominable prisons, but about the ordeal, horror endured by the hero, the boxer Billy Moore, who has a short presence on screen at the end of the film.

In South East Asia, drug related offences are very harshly punished — and not just there, in a number of Arab countries it equals hanging or beheading — and we can think of the Philippine president, the mad Duterte, who boasts about killing suspects of drug associated offences — suspects for he is no judge and even if he were, a trial is needed before sentencing, never mind executing a man or woman.

A Prayer before Dawn reminds one of the madness, the horror and terror from Midnight Express, where another westerner suffers horrendous, abhorrent abuses in a Turkish jail — by the way, that country is veering towards dictatorship and more torture of journalists, opponents, with the ascent of the New Age Sultan, Erdogan.

Billy Moore has to sleep together with scores of people in the same, not that large room, in a jail that cannot be worse than hell itself, prisoners do not even have the space to rest at centimeters from other inmates, and they have arms and legs crossing the neighbor.

As soon as a new inmate is brought to the big room, the leader of the gang that dominates the scene faces him, then they start kicking the new arrival, which is soon attacked and invited to surrender to the sexual attacks of the other prisoners, who take turns and rape the vulnerable…or perhaps we should say everyone.

Except the hero is a very determined, gritty, resilient, strong — physically and mentally , brave, perseverant young man who does not give in, he resists the attacks of the gang, who resort to holding him and making him watch while they force themselves upon another man.

This victim is dead in the morning, apparently he has hanged himself, after rascals, violent, tattooed prisoners raped him one meter away from Billy, who was immobilized by these brutes, monsters with a human face — although given the inscriptions that covered their face, skull, sometimes they no longer look like mere mortals, more like demons.

There is a chance to fight as a boxer, but it is an overwhelming, surreal, extremely hard job, training for what is probably called Thai boxing, using fists with legs and special blows that the hero has to learn in training.

The English boxer has no money to pay guards, bribe other officials, or even get cigarettes or anything he might need inside — and all the basic necessities are simply absent inside, if one has no money — because he says he has no family.

He becomes friendly with someone from outside prison, who visits regularly, whose sexual identity is hard to establish — although it might have been stated in the film, maybe he or she is transsexual?

Two poor fish fight in a bowl, Betta Splendens is the name of the species, wherein the male fights another male just as soon as he sees him, displaying wonderful tail and fins and in the Thai jail they place on money on one or the other, with Billy guessing the winner, but having his gains denied.

The hero has to fight quite a few prisoners and some guards, resulting in solitary confinement, brutal punishments, cuts, blackouts and terrible pains, but after the fish fight, he does get his wins eventually.

A Prayer for Dawn seems to be similar with the many boxing films, from Rocky to Raging Bull, but the savagery, extreme brutality seems to be taken to a completely different level in this film.

Oct 01, David rated it liked it. The first half of the book was alright. The arrest itself is kind of dramatic too will he poop them out?!?

But after that, everything just fizzles out. For example, he takes up boxing again after hanging around the prison gym for a while, has a fight, wins, He at some point becomes a Muslim for the food , which I guess is meant to be important given the title of the book, but aside from a couple of paragraphs about his time cutting papayas, nothing more is said about it.

He just wants to rest, it seems. We first meet Billy Moore, a drug-addicted petty criminal from a broken, working class British home, as he is leaving prison for rehab.

With no positive frame of reference through which to process his life experiences or the world around him, Billy at first takes rehab lightly and fights every effort to help him.

But as he rapidly runs out of second chances, he manages to make a change, to quit drugs and alcohol, and to begin a relatively normal life.

Things are going well for Billy, when he deci We first meet Billy Moore, a drug-addicted petty criminal from a broken, working class British home, as he is leaving prison for rehab.

Things are going well for Billy, when he decides to take a vacation with a friend to Thailand. He quickly finds his place in the country, learns Muay Thai and fights professionally at a local club, and even gets a job as an extra in a Sylvester Stallone movie filming in the region.

Billy quickly adapts to the art of Muay Thai kickboxing and is able to win his first bout in a close back-and-forth brawl.

Impressed by his performance, prison warden Officer Preecha has him transferred into the boxing team cell, with him being the first foreigner to compete in the national Muay Thai tournament and represent the prison.

There he soon develops a comradery with the other boxers, receiving a tattoo on his back. However, he is ambushed by Keng and his gang, who threaten him with a pin prick attack if he loses the tournament.

Even worse, it is established that Billy is suffering from hernia due to his drug abuse, and any subsequent damage could result in serious internal bleeding.

Regardless, he still desires to compete. The resulting match is gruelling for Billy, as he takes multiple shots to his stomach and is also fouled by his opponent.

However, using what he learnt, he manages to knock his opponent out with a spinning back elbow and wins the fight.

Despite the victory, the physical trauma is too much, and Billy ends up vomiting blood and passing out. Billy is quickly rushed to hospital, and after waking up, he sneaks out of the building and into the cityscape.

Billy soon reconsiders his actions and returns back to the hospital. After being transferred, he meets his father played by the real Billy Moore and the two exchange a solemn smile.

End credits reveal that after serving three years, Billy Moore was transferred to a UK prison and released on an amnesty by the King of Thailand in October Since his release, he has devoted his life to working with other addicts and fighting to maintain his own recovery.

In February , A24 acquired U. The website's critical consensus reads, " A Prayer Before Dawn is far from an easy watch, but this harrowing prison odyssey delivers rich rewards — led by an outstanding central performance from Joe Cole.

Second, read the first point. Plot: It is an inspirational and engaging narration of a drug addict who was accused of various crimes related to drug dealing.

It unfolds the journey of the author when he was handcuffed by the Thailand Police and had to spend his days in the most torturous prison imaginable.

B Una palabra : WOW. Billy's life was normal like any other person except the fact that he was a hardcore drug addict. He went to rehab for counselling and did everything to get rid of this addiction.

His approach and methods seemed to function very well in erasing the word 'drug' from his life but fate had decided to play some more with his willpower.

Resisting himself all he could, he did his best to avoid it and rescued himself until the fateful day came in Thailand where he was again trapped in the claws of drugs.

Only this time, it was deadly dangerous. Being a teacher, Muay Thai boxer, an action actor, trainer and finally a great counselor.
