I read this one after reading his memoir, "The World of Yesterday," which is an account of his life as his days passed through World War I and then the period between the wars.

This book, which is based on the Biblical story of Jeremiah and the fall of Jerusalem to Babylo This book, was written by Zweig as Austria, his home, faced World War I, a war that the majority there seemed to welcome but that Zweig saw for what it was: the means of the destruction of the Austrian empire and the old world.

Had he lived, however, he'd see the Allies gain the conflict, which would provide him with a breath of optimism and comfort.

He'd see his adoptive country, Brazil, leaving in a long-overdue dictatorship. Later, already an octogenarian, he'd see Brazil plunging onto another dictatorship - against which Zweig would certainly say nothing, not in the least because he was an anti-communist.

One thing is certain: the writer would never live to witness the growth of the largest criminal organization ever invented in Brazil or, for that matter, in any other place.
